Short brake in Lamu, Kenya

Hi everybody,
Yet again another message with some pictures. At this moment i am seated next to a pearlwhite beach in Lamu, Kenya. It's MSF-Holland policy that expats whithin the Somalia mission take a short brake every 7th week in the project. This is because we work 6 days per week and the confined environment we live in. So now a nice brake!
In Marere (Somalia) i am still having a great time. The expat team has had a large turn-over the last month so we are now with a crew of which 4 will remain for another 8 months justlike me. It has just been Ramadan which was a quiet period for the hospital. Also there have been some heavy rains that deterioated the roads making the hospital less accessable to patients. But that's over now. Ied (end of Ramadan) has just been celebrated and a busy period is coming up. The riverlevel has risen strongly lately, increasing the chance of flooding in our area. In December 2006 the water even reached the front gate of the hospital. Floods are known to quickly cause and spread cholera in the area. We've brought our 2 motorboats to the river. Unfortunately expats are not allowed on mobile clinics by boat, but i luckily i was allowed to take both boats with 40HP engines for a test-spin on the river. Not all our staff know how to swim and the rivers are full of crocodiles so it's always quite an expedition!
So i am still enjoying myself very much. There much variety in my job and the moment i get up i have no clue as to what i will be doing in the afternoon. Sometimes frustrating but also a nice challenge!

goed al deze tekenen van leven, van werk tot scandinavisch relaxen met een ABC-sectie als bonus. Veelzijdige bijdrage heb je daar! Met al die krokodillen leer je vanzelf hard zwemmen, misschien kunnen we voor de Olympiade al vast een gouden plak reserveren.

Hier een berichtje uit Nederland. Wat ver weg... Nu even lekker een paar dagen rust voor jouw.
Ik geniet echt van je verhalen en foto's. Ziet er spannend uit. Succes met de komende regentijd. Maar hopen dat het water niet al te hoog steigt. Bij ons is het bootje weer opgeruimd en klaar voor de winter. Tot later!
