It's me again. A bit earlier than expected back in Nairobi. Unfortunately we had to leave the project with all 8 expats 2 days ago. The last period it's been quite noisy within the community in relation to the hiring of Somali staff for our project for a specialised surgical program for vaginal fistulas (VVF). In short: the community elders selects the staff we require for cleaning and assisting during such a program. Since these are mostly unskilled positions, a lot of people stand a chance. At this time we needed 6 people meaning that of course many people were dissappointed. This situation caused the expats to be limited in their movement outside the compound. 2 days ago one of our expat doctors was attacked within the compound with a stick. Nothing serious but direct cause for the evacuation for security reasons and to show that this is not tolerated. During our absence the hospital will continue to operate under the supervision of our dedicated Somali staff. In Marere we have over a hundred contracted staff who were also very sad about the incident.
In the project i am still enjoying myself very much. It's a busy period and our expat construction log has recently left te project so next to supply log i am now also responsible for all constructional activities. Currently we are hiring around 30 men to construct various buildings and structures under my supervision. Pictures are included with this message.
Since we are probably not returning to Marere the comming 2 weeks and i will go on holiday then, i am flying to Kismayo tomorrow to assist in one of the other MSF-Holland projects in Somalia. This project is focused on surgery and will facilitate the VVF surgery program as was scheduled in Marere at the moment.
Kismayo is situated 120 km from Marere and the VVF patients in Marere will travel there by mini-buses. From Nairobi i am now arranging for trucks to transports beds, medicin and our OT table to Kismayo. I will help out the coming 2 weeks in Kismayo with all logistics related to this surgical program until my holiday starts (looking at lions and laying on the beach in Lamu!).
Enjoy the pictures!
Greetings from Nairobi,
Anton

Henriette:
Blijf schrijven! Liefs, Henriette -

Klinkt allemaal redelijk pittig.

mvg,
Marco
PS: Ook de groeten van Cardo
